We wanted to see a wolf. So we left before dawn and drove to Lamar valley on a tip from John Clark. We watched some bison and antelope then we heard some howling like wolves about 9:00. They could have been coyotes. The antelope were acting nervous and we finally saw the two characters in the pictures below. We had a pamphlet that showed some characteristics of wolves, coyotes and red fox and these were pretty big so we called them wolves. Later this afternoon we did see a coyote for sure, much smaller. So we' re still calling them wolves.
Then about noon we hiked up a hill on a tip where wolves were spotted earlier, a family of 11 we were told. There was a gentleman on the hill watching through a long distance spotting scope and he had them located but they were down in the brush about 1/2 mile away. Two of them got up and moved and he let us locate them through his lens. One was black and the other gray. We could also see them through binoculars once we had them located. They were too far for pictures.
The rest of the day we spent just seeing what we could see and got pictures of some mothers with their babies.
We'll stay here Saturday night then leave Sunday for Big Hole battlefield in Montana.
