Mount Vernon, Or

This is Tuesday morning, October 14.  We're going to stay another night here at the state park to recover a little.  It was a tough drive here from Walla Walla.  It was about 160 miles and we climbed 5 winding mountain passes.

About the Whitman Mission, I didn't learn at the mission about how the monument came to be built honoring Whitman.  So, this morning, with time on my hands, I looked it up.  Here is a National Park Service site that talks about it:

As you might guess, it was his associates in the church that had it built.  The Indians apparently had no part in it.
